Livestock products (meat, milk, and eggs) are food sources of good quality protein which are very much needed for the creation of high quality human resources in order to win the very tight competition in the current era of globalization. Therefore, livestock products need to be increased in production and quality in order to meet the increasing needs along with the increasing population. In this case, Nutrition Science and Feed Technology plays a very important role because it can affect both of the above. Besides, the cost of animal feed is the largest component (up to 70%) in the operational costs of a livestock business.
The quality of human resources (HR) is a major factor in competing in today's era of globalization. In order to form quality human resources, adequate nutrition is needed, especially animal protein from livestock. In Indonesia, the need for livestock products is increasing in line with population growth and an increase in people's income. On the other hand, the cost of feed is the largest component in the livestock business. Therefore, the role of graduates of the Animal Nutrition and Food Study Program (PS NMT) for the development of the livestock industry is very important.
The Department of Animal Nutrition and Feed Technology (INTP), Faculty of Animal Science, IPB has an important role at the national level in academic development in the field of nutrition and animal feed. To maintain and enhance this role, especially to produce graduates who are competitive both nationally and internationally in obtaining employment, the development of the INTP Study Program is very necessary.
The Department of Animal Nutrition and Feed Technology (INTP) offers a Major Program in Animal Nutrition and Feed Technology (S1) and Postgraduate Programs (S2 and S3) with a quality Major in Nutrition and Feed Science for progressive, active and creative national cadres by equipping them with nutrition science and feed technology. In order to produce graduates who can compete at the national and regional levels, the INTP Department conducts continuous development of the education process.
Chaired by Prof. Dr. J. H. Hutasoit within the structure of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine – University of Indonesia, the Institute of Animal Nutrition and Feed Science and Institute of Animal Science were established as the forerunner to the Faculty of Animal Science, IPB
1 September 1963-1994: Based on the Presidential Decree No 279 the Faculty of Animal Science was officially established with 2 majors, one of them is Animal nutrition and feed science. Those was managed under Animal Production Science Study Program
11 July 1996: Based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 216/DIKTI/Kep/1996, the Animal Nutrition and Feed Science Study Program for providing undergraduate degree was established.
The Feed Technology and Industry Study Program was formed to provide the vocational program
Based on the Decree of the Rector of IPB no.001/K13/PP/2005, the Animal Nutrition and Feed Science Study Program changed into the Department of Nutrition and Feed Technology. The Feed Technology and Industry Study Program (vocational program) joined the Vocational College.
NFT Department has managed the Master and Doctoral programs with a major in Nutrition and Feed Sciences
Based on the IPB Rector Decree no.126/13/OT/2008, NFT has 4 divisions, namely (1) Division of Feed Technology and Industry, (2) Division of Nutrient Metabolism and Biosynthesis of Animal Products, (3) Division of Applied Animal Nutrition, and (4) Division of Forage and Pasture Science and Technology
Based on the Decree of Rector of IPB no.13/IT3/PP/2020, NFT has 6 divisions, namely
